Rice Production in Nigeria|Investment opportunity

Rice is one of the most important human food crop in the world and one of the major staple foods in Nigeria, directly feeding more people than any other crop. Rice has also fed more people over a longer time than has any other crop. It is spectacularly diverse, both in the way it is grown and how it is used by humans. These rare qualities have made its production high priority because rice production in Nigeria is among the lowest within neighboring countries.

Although the production of rice in Nigeria has increased, there still is a huge gap between the demand and supply of the commodity. The Nigerian economy today and the continuous increase in the demand for rice daily presents the perfect opportunity for investors and farmers to dive into rice production because increased production of the commodity will largely improve the economy in many areas. Investors are therefore urged to join in the cultivation and production of rice, considering the opportunities in the business. More investments in rice production will help the country achieve self-sufficiency.

With the current increase in demand to promote and ensure food security in Nigeria, this is an opportunity to empower rural farmers to boost the production of rice which will aid the distribution and expansion of the supply chain in Nigeria. Rice farming can serve as a source of income to farmers and a host of other groups.

All these said and done; Farmcenta has secured 300 hectares of farmland for the production of rice in Agwutashi, Nasarawa state. We are into rice farming to bridge the gap between the demand and supply of the commodity, by doing so, we will also be empowering many rural farmers in the process.

Rice Farm Activities:

Land

We secured a 300 hectares (750 acres) of farmland for rice cultivation in Aguatashi, Nasarawa State. Nasarawa State is one of the hubs for rice production in Nigeria.

Operations

Land preparation is currently on-going on the land i.e clearing of the farmland, and ploughing and harrowing will begin the second week in May before planting in June. We will be using mechanized farming technology such as tractors, bulldozers, and harvester e.t.c throughout the rice farming process. Procurement of all necessary farm inputs such as high-quality seeds, fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, e.t.c has been done for the smooth running of the rice farm cycle.

Planting

Planting will begin in between June and July, these months happen to be the season for rice cultivation. An expected amount of rainfall is required before planting begins. Bags of high-quality seeds as well as herbicide and other farm inputs have been procured for the planting operations.

Other farm activities are in place and will begin when need be. Rice takes about 3-6 months to mature, therefore, harvesting will begin before the year runs out. Processing, bagging, and supply will ensue thereafter.

Farmcenta is an Agri-tech startup that seeks to improve rural farming by addressing farmer’s critical farming needs such as mechanized tools, high yield seeds, training on climate-smart agriculture techniques and off-take harvest to increase food production in Nigeria and Africa. Our mission is to provide an opportunity for everyone to support SDG 2: Zero Hunger.
